Chapter 15

Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; HE WAS LOST AND IS FOUND.’ So they began to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; HE WAS LOST AND IS FOUND.’ ”

Actually, I could wrap them, but I don’t think you’d care for the result.

Wonderful statue at #1, love the expression of joy and thankfulness on his father’s face as he lifts his eyes to God.
#2 by Jan Steen, artist of the Dutch Golden Age. Superb handling of color. He was also known for the humor and moralizing he injected in everyday life scenes.
#10 Copping
#12, remarkable painting by the Russian artist.
#17, Semiradski, Polish artist encountered before on this thread. He became well known for his scenes of the New Testament.
#18 Tissot
All stained glass windows. Well done, Dan!

To: Hebrews 11:6

Read something interesting about this once that goes to show that Christ lowered himself in order,to forgive all,of,us “abusers of his grace”, we,too went our own way, with no regsrd for the one who gave us life, and spent all that we had until one day we reached the “end of ourselves”, and reached out for help efen though we knew we didnt deserve it because of how we treated our father, our creator...

The son, an abuser of grace, had disgraced the father, and according to Jewish law, and the townspeople would usually get involved and stone the disgracer to death if the person were found guilty of gross disgrace, because the disgracer would have brought shame not,j7st to his family, but to the whole village, according to Kenneth Bailey, a scholar of Luke’s parables.

The father knew this, and before the townspeople got to the son, he ran (something that was considered undignified and shameful in jewis h culture evidently) out to meet his son with open arms of forgiveness, in order to shield his son from the mob. the father lowered himself by running “shamefully” out to protect the very son who had abused his grace. He did so willingly because he loved the son so much, just as christ loves us so much .

Thanks. When I read about the Jewish law and what they “could, have done” to,the son if theynhad found him guilty, which they no doubt would have, I likened them to the evil one, the accuser, who stand and points out our sins and condemns us before,God, but God says that we are forgiven in front of all the accusers, just like, the father of,the story does, only the father did so at great risk, knowing the townsfolk might turn on him too, but he counted the cost, lowered himself “by running”, and ran tl forgive eagerly, jusy like christ does when we come to the end of ourselves.

Just gave the parable a whole nother level of intimate-ness between myself and the saviors willingness to eagerly run to us in forgiveness with joy in his heart.
